Not all sessions require quilts. My husband and I recently had our photos taken (the last time we had that happen was at our wedding!)! I wore a beautiful floral dress. None of my quilts seemed to match. So I get it, quilts don't go with every session. I always keep a very light colored quilt in my stash just in case this happens. I didn't want a colorful quilt in my photos, but also didn't want to sit on the dirty ground! ha!
BUT, when they do, they add the perfect pop of color, the right amount of texture, just enough contrast, and a whole lot of character. I sometimes get in a funk and forget different creative ways to use them during my sessions. I always put my clients sitting on the quilt, because, well that is obvious. But what are some other ways to bring this treasure into each session?
1. Sit on your quilt.
This is the obvious one, but still so important! Not only is it a good prop, but it is also practical. Sometimes the ground is wet or dirty. Sometimes the mom in the session is wearing white pants. Either way, sit your client(s) down on your gorgeous quilt!
2. Lay on your quilt.
Still obvious, but many times forgotten. This isn't always the most flattering position, so be kind to your clients. But I love this during engagement sessions, for just kids, and for senior girls! Let them stare deeply into the sole of your camera or laugh hysterically at your awesome photographer jokes.
3. Wrap up your clients!
I particularly like this during my fall sessions when it is little chilly out! I don't use it as much during the summer unless I am going for the sweat shimmering on my client's face look! ;)
My fave is for engagement sessions, because we both know they like being close together. I also love when parent's snuggle up with their littles. Add this set up to your family sessions, you and the parents (and the kids think it is fun!) will love it!
4. Twirl or run with your quilt.
Twirling is always a good thing. Always. Treat your quilt as a big flowing dress. If your client is already wearing a flowing dress, win win.
I tend to just do this with littles. But if I shot seniors, I would definitely have my girls do this. For twirling, I simply tell them to twirl until they fall, which always happens. For running, I have them run towards me, laughing of course! The kids love me because I let them fall *and* run.
Do it. You won't regret it.
5. Get the parents involved.
When parents are doing something silly, like waving a quilt around, you *will* get genuine laughs out of the kids. I promise. It helps the parents and the kids open up. It also makes for some beautiful (and uber creative) photos.
